How to Love Your Book Club

Updated 10-26-23

25 years ago 🤩, a good friend and I started two book clubs. One for our daughters, a Mother-Daughter Book Club, a wonderful experience which, unfortunately, they have now grown out of, and one for ourselves. Our first book was Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. Highly recommended if you haven’t already read it.

Stack of Books

Our book club has gone through a number of growing pains over the years, but I’m happy to say that the ten other gals in it with me now, are pretty special, and plan to be lifelong members. Our goal has always been to have fun, choose interesting books, support one another, and did I mention, have fun? One friend came to us from another club where the moderator rang a bell if there were too many “sidebar conversations”. 😜 Suffice it to say that there is no bell ringing in our group, the more conversations, the merrier.

We set it up so that each member would host one month (we take a break in August), select their own book, and provide snacks and drinks for the group. Wine and cheese anyone ? 🍷🧀 We love a good book, but have found that books we don’t love lead to very interesting discussions… I may never live down Cavedweller by Dorothy Allison. My apologies to the author. 😄

John always accuses us of using our meeting time to complain about our husbands, but that’s not *all* we do. 😂 We talk about life. Good and bad. Joyous and sad. Changes for the better and the worse. And we celebrate and support each other through it all. And of course, at some point, we do remember to talk about the book. 😉

So, how do you love your book club?

  • It really starts with the people you choose to be in it with you: it’s like a marriage, choose people you could be with through thick and thin
  • The books are almost secondary: strange, but true
  • Keep an open mind: you will read books that you would never have chosen yourself, and that’s the best part
  • Above all, have fun!

Have you started a book club? I would love to hear how you set yours up.
