Hygge: Part One

What is Hygge?

Denmark always ranks as one of the happiest countries in the world. Hygge is a concept that the Danes embrace. Happiness and Hygge, therefore, would appear to go hand-in-hand… and wouldn’t we all like to be happier. 🥰

Hygge has no direct translation in English, but Merriam-Webster defines it as a cozy quality that makes a person feel content and comfortable. I think we could all use more of this… especially in these dark days of winter.

Here are some ways that we could up the cozy factor in our homes, and then make a point of trying to incorporate them into our day-to-day lives.

Cozy Home

  • A cozy place to sit
  • Soft throws
  • Fire burning in the fireplace
  • Soft lighting
  • Candles burning, a scent diffuser, or stovetop potpourri

Cozy Puppy by the Fire

  • Cozy: A robe, pjs, and fuzzy socks… I could do this 24/7 😊

Work on a Puzzle Together

  • Time spent just being together
  • Put your phones down
  • Read (as in Jolabokaflod), listen to an audiobook or a podcast
  • Board games
  • Movie time: whether it’s new to you, or an old favorite
  • Work on a puzzle
  • Listen to your favorite music
  • Take an afternoon nap by the fire
  • Fill the tub, grab a glass of wine and a book, and relax
  • Work on something creative: knitting, journaling, drawing…

Chocolate Chip Cookies and Milk

  • Prepare your favorite comfort food, be it savory or sweet: homemade soup with freshly baked bread or chocolate chip cookies warm from the oven… yum!
  • A cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate in your favorite mug
  • Toast marshmallows over the fire, and then add them to your hot chocolate
  • Breakfast in bed
  • Cocktail hour with cheese and crackers
  • Candlelit supper

Honestly, I think I’m pretty well cut out for the Hygge lifestyle… I may have been a Dane in a past life. 😄 Nevertheless, I’m going to challenge myself to a week of Hygge! I’ll report back and let you know how I made out. John doesn’t know it yet, but he’s going to enjoy a week of Hygge too. 😂

Wish me luck! And join me on your own Hygge adventure.
