It All Started with the Dishwasher…

It All Started with the Dishwasher

It all started with the dishwasher… but it didn’t end there. 😩 Our dishwasher, which had always worked like a dream, was suddenly spitting out Error Codes and refusing to drain properly. It’s going through a phase, we thought… we should probably clean out the filter and that will surely solve the problem.

Dishwasher Error Codes
The Dreaded Error Codes

Well… that did *not* solve the problem. Okay, let’s try that again, maybe we missed something… nope… now not only was the dishwasher unhappy, but we were too. 😭 Maybe we actually need to call in a repair person. 😭😭😭

Okay Then… It Must be a Sink Issue…

Wait! Hold on! Enter YouTube… found our dishwasher model and the author of the video suggested that a problem of this kind if often related to the sink not draining properly.

Okay, we can handle this! Let’s use some drain cleaner and use the plunger. Should be easy peasy lemon squeezy… whaaat πŸ˜‘… still no joy… 😭

No Wait… It’s a Disposal Issue…

YouTube to the rescue once more. This video recommended removing the pipe connecting the disposal to the drainpipe, look for clogs, clear them… problem solved. Okay, I can handle this! Pipes removed… no clogs found… now what??? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

We Need a Plumber

Much crying 😭 and many expletives 🀬 later, we finally arrived at the conclusion that we needed a plumber’s help, and that we had better call someone before we lose our minds!!!

Being still fairly new to the area, we needed advice. Our neighbors came to the rescue with the name of a plumber who they highly recommend. Yay! We called. They texted back that this sounds like a better job for a septic company to handle. They gave us the name of a group that they highly recommend.

We Need a Septic Company…

We called. They are closed for the holiday weekend. 😩😩😩 Will this pain never end??? We left a message. They called back the day after the holiday and said they’d be out sometime later that day.

Our Hero Arrives… We Hope…

Cautiously optimistic now. Our hero arrives. πŸ’ͺ He starts looking for blocked pipes. He finds the problem area. Apparently at some point in the past, an “upgrade” was made that placed one of the pipes leading to the drain to the septic tank in an uphill direction, before it turned down again. Even I, as a layperson, could see that this was not the best decision.

Ugh… This Takes a Strong Stomach…

He got to work! He cut out the uphill turn and adjusted the pipe so the entire length of it sloped downward until it reached the drain to the septic. But before he could do that, he had to remove an *incredible*, and I do mean INCREDIBLE, amount of impacted grease from the pipe that apparently backed up nearly all the way to the sink! 😲 I won’t go into too much detail here, but suffice it to say that I have *never* *ever* smelled a smell like that before, and I hope to *never* *ever* smell a smell like that again! 🀒🀒🀒

The Moment of Truth…

Run the water and see what happens… all is calm, all is bright. The sink now drains like a champ. Our hero leaves and we sit down to dinner knowing that this is all behind us. 😊

Or is It…

Will the happy couple still be happy once they set their dishwasher to run? Will the sink continue to drain? Will the horrible Error Codes rear their ugly heads once more? The saga continues. 😬 Stay tuned for Part Deux.
